SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team plays crosstown rival St. Mary's University on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at the NISD Field #1.
The Cardinals (3-2) hit .298 as a team in the season opening St. Mary's Tournament this past weekend. Shortstop
Ashley Freeman (Canyon Lake/Smithson Valley HS) led the offense with a .438 batting average and seven runs scored during the tourney.
Monica Acuna (San Antonio/Holmes HS) and
Kim Hanson (Devine/Devine HS) led the team with four RBI's apiece.
In the circle,
Briana Sanchez (San Antonio/Marshall HS) had an outstanding weekend going 2-0 with a 0.82 earned run average in 17.0 innings of work. She was named to the all-tournament team.
Whitney Waltrip (Orangevale, CA/Casa Robles HS) picked up the other win for the Cards and is 1-1 with a 5.36 ERA on the season.
The Rattlers had similar results to the Cardinals over the weekend going 3-2. Christina Rodriguez hit .385 and drove in seven runs while smashing a pair of home runs. Nicole Sardelich and Taylor Vidrine combined to go 15-for-29 and score 11 runs. Crystal Keller tossed a shutout and only allowed one hit in 6.0 innings while Emily Brittain went 2-0 with a 1.31 ERA.
