Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Sophomore
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) had a career night for the University of the Incarnate Word on Saturday as he poured in 32 points on 9-of-9 shooting from three-point range to lead the team to an 83-56 victory in men's basketball action on Saturday at the McDermott Center.
Hittle knocked down five three-pointers in the first half and then connected on four more in the second half before hitting the bench early with the Cardinals (8-1) firmly in control of the game. The school record for most three-pointers in a game without a miss was held by Chris Patterson who went 6-for-6 on January 22, 2009 at St. Edward's. Hittle tied that mark with 16:23 remaining in the game and then broke the record on with 14:54 on the clock. He added two more three-pointers and ended the game one away from the school record of 10.
In addition to Hittle's shooting prowess, the Cardinals played fantastic defense holding the Warhawks (4-3) to 27.6 percent shooting from the field and just 2-of-17 from three-point range.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS), the leading scorer on the season for UIW heading into the game, only had six points, but picked it up elsewhere with seven rebounds, five assists, five blocks and four steals.
The Cardinals shot 40.6 percent from the field, made 11-of-24 from three-point range and were 20-of-29 at the foul line.
Anthony Horton (League City/Campbell HS) and
Justin Philippe (Linden, NJ/Navarro JC) each had solid games down low. Horton finished with 10 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes while Philippe added 10 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes. Freshman
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) had his best all-around game with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Overall, the Cardinals had 54 rebounds, 19 assists and 12 turnovers.
The Warhawks entered the game with solid credentials, including a win at UTSA earlier in the season, but were never in the game. Alex Lewis led the team with 12 points and four assists off the bench. Brandon Golden had seven points and led all players with 11 rebounds. McMurry had 48 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 turnovers in the game.
