Box Score CEDAR HILL, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team tipped off the 2013-14 season at Northwood University on Saturday and picked up an 88-72 win thanks to a great second half performance.
The Cardinals (1-0) and Knights (1-3) went into the halftime break tied at 36-36. The second half proved to be a different game. UIW shot 53.6 percent from the field in the half and made 7-of-15 from three-point range.
Freshman
Sam Burmeister led the Cardinals with 22 points in his first career game. He went 6-of-11 from the field, made 5-of-9 from three-point range and connected on 5-of-6 from the foul line. He also had three assists in the game.
Overall, the Cardinals had five players score in double figures.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) scored 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) added 14 points while
Ian Markolf scored 12 points and
Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Creek HS) chipped in with 10 points. UIW shot 48.2 percent from the field for the game and made 11-of-27 from three-point range. They struggled at the foul line making 17-of-32 from the charity stripe.
The Knights shot 34.8 percent from the field, made 4-of-23 from three-point range and were 15-of-19 at the foul line. BJ Dale led the team with 16 points and six rebounds while Everett Pleasant had 13 points and seven boards. Northwood lost to North Texas earlier in the week by five points.
The Cardinals had 12 more rebounds than the Knights and committed two fewer turnovers in the game.
The Cardinals are back in action on Monday night at Trinity at 7 p.m.
