Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – In their first home game of the season, the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team hit triple digits on the scoreboard as they defeated Northwood University, 106-94 at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals (4-0) set a school record for three-point field goals as they connected on 17-of-29 from long range. The three-pointer played a big role throughout the game. Every time the Knights (1-2) would start to make a run, the Cardinals were there with another three-pointer making eight in the first half and nine in the second half.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) was 7-of-12 from beyond the arc and freshman
Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) connected on 5-of-6 from deep.
The game was back-and-forth for much of the contest with six ties and 12 lead changes occurring. UIW held a slim 45-44 lead at halftime and it was still a one-point lead with 8:11 remaining. A 14-2 run capped by three-pointers from Livingston and
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy-Falls HS) finally gave the Cardinals some breathing room with under 5:30 left in the contest. The Knights pulled as close as seven points with 1:17 remaining, but the Cardinals made enough free throws at the end to finish with the 12-point victory.
The Cardinals shot 49.3 percent from the field, 58.6 percent from three-point range and were 17-of-27 at the charity stripe. Livingston led the way with a career-high 31 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Burmeister finished with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor while
Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Springs HS) just missed a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) added 14 points and seven rebounds while Badillo came off the bench to finish with 10 points and six assists.
John Baker (Adkins/East Central HS) added a season high nine points in only seven minutes. The team had 24 assists, 19 turnovers and 54 rebounds.
The Knights shot 44.4 percent from the field, made 9-of-22 three-point attempts and 21-of-28 from the foul line. Everrett Pleasant led the team with 28 points and seven rebounds and BJ Dale added 25 points and eight rebounds. Mike Fisher came off the bench to finish with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. They had 15 assists, 10 turnovers and 34 rebounds.
The previous record for most three-pointers in a game by the Cardinals was 16 on January 7, 1995 against East Texas Baptist University.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday night at Southwestern University at 7:30 p.m.
