Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team traveled to UT-Arlington on Thursday night and came away with a big 52-48 victory, their first ever win against an NCAA Division I opponent.
In a defensive struggle, it was the Cardinals (2-0) ability to get to the foul line that was the difference in the game. Both teams struggled to get anything going on offense as UIW shot 26.7 percent from the field and the Mavericks (0-3) were even worse at 25.4 percent.
The Mavs started the game well scoring the first seven points and led 20-12 with 6:49 left in the first half. However, the Cardinals climbed back into the game before halftime and trailed just 24-21 at the break.
The Cardinals grabbed the lead early in the second half.
Michelle Hale (Albuquerque, NM/Rio Grande HS) converted two layups in the first minute of the half and then Joslinn Douglass (Austin/Del Valle HS) drained a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run. UIW maintained a small lead until the Mavs reclaimed the lead on a Briana Walker free throw with 6:39 to play.
UIW did not recapture the lead until Douglass made a layup with 2:06 remaining in the game. The Cardinals held the Mavs to just four points in the final 4:47 en route to the victory.
"I am so proud of our kids," said head coach
Kate Henderson. "UTA is a good rebounding team and we were able to out rebound them. We really defended their hi-low offense well and it has given us problems in the past."
