Big Shots Lead to Win

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team hit four big shots down the stretch to grab a 60-52 win over visiting Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State on Saturday at the McDermott Center. (Box Score)

Senior guard Katy Cooke (Marble Falls/Marble Falls HS) had been quiet for much of the game for the Cardinals (10-5, 6-3), but she wanted the ball in the final minutes.  Trailing 48-46 to the Rambelles (7-8, 4-5), Cooke drained a three-pointer from the corner to put the Cardinals up one with 5:04 remaining.
The Cardinals were clinging to a 51-50 lead with under 2:15 to play when Cooke drove the lane and made a tough layup.  After Leah Lemaire hit two free throws for the Belles, Cooke responded with another three-pointer to give UIW a 56-52 lead with 1:29 remaining.

The Cardinals defense stood strong over the final few possessions after taking the four-point lead.  They forced a pair of off-balanced shots and then it was an Ashlyn Green (Irving/Irving HS) steal with 23 seconds remaining that secured the victory.

In the first half, the lead changed hands eight different times and there were three ties.  The Belles shot 50 percent from the field, but the Cardinals forced them into 12 turnovers that they converted into 11 points to take a 32-28 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the game remained tight, but it appeared that the Belles were starting to take control.  They took a 48-43 lead with 7:39 remaining after a layup by Lauren Holt.  ASU would only score four more points the rest of the game as they finished by making one of their final eight shots.

The Cardinals shot 35.2 percent from the field, made 3-of-8 from three-point range and were 19-for-23 at the foul line.  Green and Cooke each finished with 12 points to lead the offense.  Green was 6-for-6 at the foul line and had four steals.  Cooke was 5-of-8 from the field.  Rose Whitehead (Grapevine/Grapevine HS) chipped in with 11 points off the bench.  Ify Mora (Grand Prairie/Arlington Bowie HS) led the team with eight rebounds and blocked a career-high four shots.  The team grabbed 33 rebounds and committed nine turnovers.

The Belles shot 40.9 percent from the field and were just 1-for-8 from three-point land.  They connected on 15-of-19 from the charity stripe and had 33 rebounds.  Holt led the team with 11 points while Morgan Youngblood added 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks as she played all 40 minutes.  The Belles committed 17 turnovers.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday at Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6 p.m.
