CARDINALS DROP FIVE-SET MATCH AT TARLETON STATE

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team traveled to Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State and went down in a tough five set match by a score of 25-15, 17-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-13. (box score)

The match was a back and forth affair with each team dominating alternating sets.  In the fifth and final set the team's played it close.  The TexAnns (9-4, 4-1) led 13-9, but the Cardinals (5-8, 2-3) came roaring back with four consecutive points to tie the match at 13-13.  TSU finally pulled out the match by scoring the final two points.

The Cardinals finished the match with 60 kills, 90 digs and 9.0 blocks while posting a .153 attack.  Senior Stephanie Bonura (Houston/Lutheran North HS) pounded out 11 kills and led the team with a .321 attack.  Kelci Lind (Lindale/Lindale HS) and Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) each posted double-doubles.  Lind had 13 kills and 13 digs while Cardenas had 27 assists and 11 digs.

Chetina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) had 10 kills, a .250 attack, seven digs and four blocks for the Cardinals.  Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) led the team with 25 digs while Beth Soukup (Helotes/O'Connor HS) added nine kills and 22 digs.  Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) led the team with 31 assists.

The TexAnns finished the match with 54 kills, 90 digs and 6.0 blocks along with a .154 attack.  Katie Covell led the team with 14 kills and 20 digs.  Stacie Murrah added 12 kills and a .250 attack.  Danielle Barker finished with 32 assists and 17 digs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday night at home against LSC rival Abilene Christian.  The match begins at 7 p.m.
