GOLDEN, COLORADO – For the second time in three days, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team suffered a difficult loss away from home. On Sunday, Colorado Mines' Tesho Akindele scored a goal with 28 seconds remaining in the match to produce a 3-2 win for the home team. (
Box Score)
Akindele's game-winning goal came on a shot from near the top of the box of a nice pass from Seun Ogunhodede. The goal gave Akindele a hat-trick and sent the #10 Cardinals (0-2) home without a result after their weekend foray into Colorado. On Friday, the Cardinals lost 2-1 to #1 Fort Lewis College.
Akindele got the scoring starting in the first 15 minutes of the game. Baski Baker set him up with a ball in space right in front of the net and he buried it home at the 14:56 mark on his second shot of the afternoon.
The Cardinals nearly scored six minutes later when
Dylan Kelly's (Tucson, AZ/Salpoint HS) shot hit the post. Kelly had another good attempt in the 36
th minute, but was thwarted by Manville Strand, the Mines' goalkeeper.
Akindele kept up the pressure on the Cardinals with two more scoring chances, but the game went to the half with the score remaining at 1-0.
In the second half, UIW substitute
Placide Buduri (Kigali, Rwanda/Old Dominion) got the start and paid off coach
Vince Martinez's decision with a game-tying goal less than three minutes into the period. He took a pass from Kelly across the middle of the goal and fired across his body into the left corner of the goal at 47:14.
Akindele put the Orediggers back on top when he netted his second goal of the game at 63:50. Alex Nass was credited with the assist and dribbling through the middle of the Cardinal defense and dropping of a pass to Akindele.
The Cardinals kept pushing the ball forward against CSM, but Strand did an excellent job of keeping the ball out of the net. Finally, the Cardinals tied the score when
Robin Nicholls (London, England/Bath University) tossed a long throw in from near the corner that was headed into the goal by an Oredigger defender at 76:57.
Over the next 12 minutes, the Cardinals peppered the CSM goal with six shots, but were unable to take the lead leaving the door open for Akindele to change the tied of the game and final result with his last minute goal.
The Cardinals outshot the Orediggers 20-13 and took one more corner kick. Kelly was the best offensive player for the Cardinals with seven shots, three shots on goal and an assist.
Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) took the loss despite making five saves. Strand picked up the win after making six saves. Akindele scored all three goals on just six shots.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m.
