SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team tied 2-2 at home against the University of Southern Indiana (USI) on Oct. 30. In the Ohio Valley Conference, the Cardinals are 0-5-4 (4-7-6 total).
CARDINALS VS. EAGLES (2-2)
Thursday's match continues a pattern of knotting scores between UIW and USI. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 1-0-3, yet the last three meetups have ended in a draw.
Paco Segura began the match hot against USI goalkeeper Jacob English with a strike at goal in the first 10 minutes, which would travel out left of the goal post. At the 18-minute mark, Segura would continue his momentum, assisting midfielder Tatenda Chigede, who found the back of the net for the second time this season (1-0).
The first half saw the Cardinals hold the Eagles to two shot attempts. Freshman Oliver Church had a strike on goal and brought the game to a tie for his first goal of his collegiate career (1-1).
Sello Diphoko was subbed in at half and immediately had two shot attempts at goal, one saved by the Eagle keeper.
A few minutes later, an Eagle forward created two offensive opportunities for USI. Cardinal goalkeeper Alejendro De La Torre blocked one of the shot attempts, but came up short as the Cardinals are down for the first time in the game (2-1).
UIW lead scorer
Diego Robles started the game, but was subbed off 30 minutes in. At the 60-minute mark, Robles returns to the match with motivation to turn the game around as he strikes twice at goal. Diphoko swiftly passes the ball to Robles for his second shot attempt in four minutes for a goal to tie the match with 35 minutes left to play (2-2).
Robles would try to win it for the Cardinals, but the Eagle keeper would save it twice, and unfortunately, struck it far right of the goal into the woodwork 85 minutes into the match.
The game would end in a 2-2 draw.
CARDINALS VS. FLAMES (1-0)
The Cardinal soccer team comes up clutch against the Liberty Flames for their first conference win of the season and downgrades the Flames' ranking in the OVC to third place following a Houston Christian University win.
For the second game in a row,
Paco Segura creates another first half opportunity for the UIW Cardinals, as he scores on his opening shot at the top left past the keeper five minutes into the match (1-0).
The Liberty Flames had a rough first half against the Cardinal defense. For the first time since 2016, the Flames ended 45 minutes of play without a single shot attempt. This is the fourth instance since 2014– they are 0-4 in that span.
The Flame offense averages the most shot attempts per game (7.1) in the OVC. Although they met that average in the second half, UIW goalkeeper
Alejandro De La Torre made his first save almost 70 minutes into the match.
With four minutes left to play, Eagle forward Sam Farner had a strike on goal for an attempt to knot the game, but De La Torre came up clutch, saving Farner's bottom right shot and ending the game 1-0.
Despite having the fourth best overall record in the OVC (5-7-6), the Cardinals would conclude the season and miss the annual OVC tournament with a 1-5-4 conference record.
