CARDINALS SHUT OUT SAINTS, 4-0

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team breezed to a 4-0 victory over visiting Our Lady of the Lake on Sunday night at Benson Stadium. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (4-2) controlled play from the outset and got an early goal from junior Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) on a free kick from just outside the box on the left wing.  He curled the shot into the upper right corner at 2:59 after Leon Taylor (Dallas/Oral Roberts) drew a yellow card foul on the Saints (1-4) goalkeeper.

The Cardinals had a few more chances in the first half to score, but were unable to add to their lead as the Saints dropped extra men into the back.

“It wasn't our best performance, but we will take the win,” said UIW head coach Vince Martinez.  “Our Lady of the Lake definitely held their own and surprised us a little bit.”
In the second half, things opened up for the Cardinals and the relentlessly attacked with 11
shots in the period.  Bailey got on the board again in the 50th minute when he slammed home an Abraham Campos (Visalia, CA/College of the Sequoias) low cross into the back of the net.  It was his team-high fifth goal of the season.

A little over 15 minutes later, Taylor scored his first career goal when he collected a Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe HS) shot that deflected off the post and deposited it into the goal at 65:14.

The final goal of the night came from Placide Buduri (San Antonio/Old Dominion).  After subbing on for the Cardinals, he took a short corner kick from Ramon Gallegos (Plano/Plano Senior HS) and lofted in a crossing pass that floated over the goalkeeper's hands and into the top left corner of the goal.

Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) picked up his second straight shutout without having to make a save.  The Cardinal defense led by James Nero (Charlotte, NC/Olympic HS) and Uros Ceglaj (Ljubljana, Slovenia/St. Mary's) allowed just one shot all night long.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday when they travel to Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
