CARDINALS KNOCK OFF #13 WEST TEXAS A&M

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Incarnate Word men's soccer team came up with a surprise 4-0 victory over the 13th ranked West Texas A&M on Friday night at Benson Stadium in Lone Star Conference play. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (3-2, 1-0) started off their scoring in the 39th minute when Julian Brown-Latham (Toronto, Ont./UNC-Charlotte) headed home his first goal of the season. Just 10 minutes later Brown-Latham buried his second goal of the night after taking advantage of a defensive mistake by West Texas A&M. Brown-Latham intercepted a pass intended for Buffalo (4-1-1, 0-1) goalkeeper, William Cooper, when he took possession and slotted it into an empty net at 48:41.

UIW added some insurance goals when sophomore Alejandro De La Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) scored twice in just as many minutes. Both goals came as a result of some excellent ball movement from the Cardinals. After a long driven ball out of the back, senior Abraham Campos (Visalia, CA/College of the Sequoias) took control and slipped a ball to De La Garza in the middle who put it in the low corner at 76:44. With just 12 minutes left in the match, Campos would assist De La Garza again with his second goal.

The Incarnate Word defense only conceded 11 shots, none of which were a serious threat on goal. Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) did not have to make a save and picked up his second shutout of the season. This is the first time that Buffalos have been held scoreless this season.

Coach Vincent Martinez was thrilled with the Cardinal's performance in their home opener. “That was our best performance of the year so far,” Martinez said. “We did some very good things in the attack, but it was a team effort defensively.  From the goalie on up, it was a great defensive effort by everyone the full 90 minutes.”

The Cardinals return to action this Sunday when they host Our Lady of the Lake University. Kick off is set for 7:30 p.m.
