It was a rough day for Cardinal softball in Canyon, TX.  After an 8-0 loss in six innings in game one of the UIW double header against West Texas A&M, the Cardinals dropped game two 7-4.
 
A home run by Lady Buff first baseman Allie Cranhill in the third inning got the scoring going for WTAMU, but that wouldn't compare to what would happen in the sixth. 
 
With two more runs in the fifth inning, WTAMU went into the sixth with a three run lead on the scoreless Cardinals.  With four hits and five runs, the Lady Buffs ended the game an inning short and didn't even give UIW a chance to rally.
 
Pitching for the Cardinals was junior Briana Sanchez (13-9).  Sanchez allowed seven hits and eight runs in the first game of the series.  While the Cardinals didn't score in the first game, they did grab three hits.
 
The second game of the doubleheader wasn't as heartbreaking for UIW.  While the Cardinals still lost, they gave the Lady Buffs much more of a game.
 
Going into the fourth inning, the Cardinals were scoreless and down by five.  With a single to right field by pitcher Whitney Waltrip, center fielder Mallory Henry made her way to home for the first Cardinals score of the evening.
 
The Cardinals would allow two more WTAMU runs in the fifth before scoring again in the seventh.  After a double by left fielder Sarah O'Brien and singles by designated player Alex Yarbrough and second baseman Melanie Padilla, the Cardinals were down 7-4 and looked like they might have a shot at a come back.
 
Unfortunately, the Lady Buff defense didn't allow anymore scoring after three UIW runs in the seventh and the Cardinals fell to WTAMU again.  The Cardinals are now 20-16 overall and 7-10 in the Lone Star Conference.
 
The Cardinals will return to Lady Buff Yard tomorrow to finish the series with WTAMU.  First pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m.
