UIW GOES 1-1 WITH JAVELINAS

Second baseman Melanie Padilla had a three run homer in the first game against TAMUK.
UIW continued conference play with a double header against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday afternoon.  With two big innings in the first game, the Cardinals took the Javelinas 7-4.  Unfortunately, UIW couldn't get the same momentum going in the second game and fell to Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-0.

The third inning was the first big inning for the Cardinals in game one.  Things got started with a homer from left fielder Sarah O'Brien and the scoring would not stop there.  Third baseman Monica Acuna hit a clutch double, driving in three more runs for UIW.  With four runs in the third, the Cardinals not only got on the score board first, but led the Javelinas 4-0.

Texas A&M-Kingsville answered the Cardinals in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own, leaving the game all tied up at four.

Both teams would struggle scoring the next couple of innings, but UIW would break through in the fifth.

Second baseman Melanie Padilla crushed one over center field for a three run homer.  Those three runs would be just what UIW needed to clench a win.

UIW pitcher Whitney Waltrip pitched four innings for the Cardinals and was credited with the win, improving her record to 8-9.  Waltrip and other pitcher Briana Sanchez, who pitched three innings for UIW, allowed seven hits and four runs against the Javelinas.

After a big win against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Cardinals were shut out by the Javelinas.

With two runs in the first inning and another one in the second, the Javelinas scored first and the Cardinals were forced to play catch up.  With a 3-0 lead after the third, while the Cardinals were still in it, they just couldn't seem to find their bats.

The Javelinas would put two more runs up in the fourth and that would be enough to seal the deal against the Cardinals.  Scoreless through the seventh inning, the Javelina defense was on point against UIW.

Waltrip pitched four innings for the Cardinals again and, unlike the first game, was given a loss, making her record 8-10.  Sanchez  pitched two innings for UIW and the duo allowed 11 hits and five runs in the loss.

The Cardinals' next conference series will be at Texas Women's University on April 13-14.  Friday's game will begin at 5 p.m. and Saturday's double header is set to start at 1 p.m.
