After sweeping the Zias of Eastern New Mexico in a double header on Friday, UIW returned to Cardinal field to take them on for the third and final time in the series. While there wasn't as much scoring for UIW as there was on Friday, the Cardinals sent the Zias packing with a 2-0 UIW win.
With three up and three out in the first inning, the Cardinal defense was spot on. When it was their turn to bat, two quick outs left the Cardinals chances of scoring first small. Then designated player and third batter for UIW
Lea Padilla hit a huge double to left field. Right fielder
Alex Yarbrough would hit a double of her own right after Padilla, driving Padilla in for the first score of the game and an RBI.
The Cardinals wouldn't score again until the sixth inning. Padilla would hit her seventh double of the season, driving in pinch runner
Taylor Johnson for an RBI and a UIW score. This would be the only other time the Cardinals would score and would be just enough for a slight win over the Zias.
Junior pitcher
Briana Sanchez pitched six innings for the Cardinals and only allowed two hits and improved her record to 11-4.
Whitney Waltrip would pitch the final inning for the Cardinals and be credited with her first save of the season.
The Cardinals start what will be a five game road trip on March 23 against Midwestern State. They'll return home for a three game series against the Rambelles of Angelo State on Friday, Macrh 30. The double header will start at 4 p.m.
