VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE SETS

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team gave #9 Angelo State all they could handle for two sets before losing in three sets 25-19, 31-29, 25-11 at the McDermott Center on Friday night in Lone Star Conference action. (Box Score)

The Cardinals (8-18, 5-11) came out on fire as they scored nine of the first 10 points of the match.  The Belles (23-3, 16-1) came back with 12 of the next 14 points before the Cards reclaimed the lead at 15-13 after scoring four straight points.  However, the Belles forced Cardinals into four attack errors down the stretch to take the first set.

The second set was one for the ages with neither team able to take control.  There were 19 ties in the set and each team had at least one set point.  The Cardinals took a 21-19 lead after a block by Baleigh Schaetter (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg HS) and Leilani Lealaimatafao (San Antonio/Warren HS).  The Belles came back and had four sets points before the Cardinals earned one at 29-28.  The Belles tied it up at 29-29 and then got a service ace on a serve that hit the top of the net and rolled over.  The final point came on an attack error by the Cardinals.

The third set was dominated by the Belles from start to finish as they had 12 kills and recorded a 91 percent side out percentage.
The Cardinals finished the match with 38 kills, 54 digs and 6.0 blocks while posting a .114 attack.  Stephanie Bonura (Houston/Lutheran North HS) led the team with 12 kills and a .391 attack.  Kelci Lind (Lindale/Lindale HS) added eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks.  Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian Prep) dished out 20 assists while Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) had a double-double with 11 assists and 11 digs.  Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) led the team with 15 digs.

The Belles had 46 kills, 61 digs and 7.0 blocks while posting a .264 attack.  Maddie Huth, Emily Booth and Shelbi Goode each had 10 kills while Booth also had .529 attack.  Alex Woolsey dished out 41 assists and had eight digs and Shelby Wilt led the team with 18 digs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Tarleton State at home.
