CARDS AND MUSTANGS TIE, 1-1

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word and Lone Star Conference rival Midwestern State engaged in their second overtime match of the year on Friday night at Benson Stadium.  This time the #7 Cardinals (11-2-1, 4-0-1) and Mustangs (8-2-5, 0-2-2) ended in a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action. (Box Score)

The match was evenly played throughout with both teams having their chances.  In the first half, the two teams combined for a total of six shots and went into the break with no score.

The second half started in much the same way as the first half until the Mustangs broke through in the 60th minute.  Andrew Power dribbled the ball into the right side of the box and sent a short, low cross in front of the net.  Len Smith took a one-time shot from six yards out that UIW goalkeeper Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) got a glove on, but could not keep out of the goal.

A little over five minutes later, it appeared like the Cardinals would tie the score after the Mustangs were called for a hand ball in the box.  Vincent Bailey (Southampton, Eng./Savio HS) took the penalty kick and fired the ball toward the lower left corner of the net, but Ray Clark made a diving stop.

As the clock wound down, UIW head coach Vincent Martinez made some changes on the field that ended up paying off.  The Cardinals finally tied the game in the 89th minute.  Bailey took a corner kick that ended up bouncing out toward midfield where substitute Alex de la Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) pounded a shot from 18 yards out into the top right corner of the net at 88:40 to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the two overtime periods each team had one good opportunity that was turned away by Kahan and Clark, respectively.
The Cardinals took 13 shots in the game and earned nine corner kicks while the Mustangs took nine shots and took two corner kicks.  Kahan made four saves for the Cardinals and Clark finished with two saves.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Edward's for a match at 7 p.m.
