VOLLEYBALL TRAVELS TO KINGSVILLE

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Incarnate Word volleyball team will travel down south for a mid-week Lone Star Conference matchup with Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

The Cardinals (6-8, 3-3) will look to maintain their momentum after defeating Abilene Christian, 3-0 last Friday. That win gave the Cardinals a .500 mark in conference play this year, but a win over the Javelinas (7-7, 1-5) will put them over .500 for the first time this year.

The Incarnate Word attack is led by freshman Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) who has 137 kills on the season and Chetina Chavis (Houston/Bush HS) who leads the team with a .283 attack. Lydia Werchan (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley HS) has a Lone Star Conference best 237 digs on the season and has contributed 33 assists. As a team, the Cardinals are averaging 12.3 kills per set and have posted a .159 attack percentage.

The Javelinas started off the season by winning 6-of-7, but followed that up with a six match losing streak. They snapped their losing streak on Saturday with a win over Abilene Christan.  The Javelinas are led by Dedra Brown who has a team best 188 kills, which currently ranks second highest in the LSC. Sarah Fountain leads the team in assists with a total of 346 on the year.

The Cardinals lost both matches to the Javelinas last season but hold a 22-7 overall record.

This is the first matchup of the 2012-13 year between UIW and Texas A&M-Kingsville.  The two schools compete for the annual Nuesch-Witt South Texas Victory Cup that is presented to the school that earns the most points throughout the year.  Each sport has an opportunity for three total points during the year.
