POOR SHOOTING DOOMS UIW

In the second game of the home-and-home series between the University of the Incarnate Word and the Texas A&M University – Kingsville women's basketball teams, the Javelinas got some payback against the Cardinals with a 54-45 victory.

UIW (10-7 overall, 5-6 in the Lone Star Conference) defeated TAMUK on Thursday night, 68-59, at the McDermott Center, but as it was the last game of the first half of the LSC basketball season, the teams then play each other again the very next game to start the second half of LSC play.

Incarnate Word led at halftime, 23-18, and had a 21-point effort from the bench, but Kingsville outscored the Cardinals 36-to-22 in the second half and benefitted from a 30-to-16 point advantage in the paint.

The major factor that hurt UIW was the team's abysmal shooting from the floor – hitting just 11-of-61 shots for 18%. Incarnate Word missed all 11 three-point shots they attempted, as well.

The Cardinals made 23 of their 28 free throw attempts, however, which kept them reasonable close for the duration of the game – but their inability to hit shots from the floor ultimately cost them a chance at the win.

UIW was led in scoring by Ashlyn Green, who had 16 points to go with her 6 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 shot-blocks. Also scoring in double figures for UIW was junior guard Katy Cooke with 10 points.

Ifunanya Mora scored 9 points.

Incarnate Word will be back on the road this week against West Texas A&M on Thursday, January 26, in a 5:30 p.m. matchup against the Lady Buffs. Then, on Saturday, the 28th, they will be on the road against Eastern New Mexico University at 2 p.m.
