WOMEN SHUT OUT TAMU-COMMERCE, 3-0

Senior goalkeeper Tori Puentes makes one of her five saves en route to UIW's 3-0 shutout victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday.

The Incarnate Word women's soccer team improved their record to 4-1-2 overall and earned another Lone Star Conference victory by shutting out the visiting Texas A&M-Commerce Lions, 3-0, on Sunday at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.

Angelica Carrizales scored her second and third goals of the weekend in the first half, scoring both goals (giving her four on the season) from outside the penalty area.

The first goal was a heads-up play where Carrizales noticed the Commerce goalkeeper out of position and arched a high, banding shot into the net where the goalie couldn't get to it. The second goal found Carrizales and junior Sam Johnson just outside the penalty area with the TAMU-Commerce goalie and a defender. Johnson got the ball on her foot, but saw that Carrizales had a better shot and unselfishly passed it to her teammate for the 2-0 lead at 10:42.

Johnson assisted on both of Carrizales's goals.

Finally, as the first half came to a close, freshman Sarah Johnson lead a charge up the middle by UIW and cut around a defender before beating the goalkeeper for the 3-0 lead.

Sarah Parker was credited with the assist.

On the other side of the field, Tori Puentes and the rest of the Cardinal defense withstood 10 shots – five of which Puentes had to make saves on. One save came midway through the second half when a Lion player broke free behind the defense and was one-on-one with Puentes. UIW's senior goalkeeper flew out of the goal and made a great save to preserve the shutout.

UIW is now 2-1-1 in the Lone Star Conference. The team will remain at home next weekend, playing the first game of doubleheaders on both Friday and Sunday night at Benson Stadium. Friday's game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. and will be against Eastern New Mexico University.
