SAN ANTONIO -- Though they lost their shutout streak, the University of the Incarnate Word Women's Soccer team still made enough late stops to stay undefeated on the young season.
Hannah Alexander made seven saves, including a pair of point-blank stops late in the second half, as the Cardinals held off Texas Southern by the final of 2-1 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium Thursday afternoon.
After netting a pair of goals against Texas A&M San Antonio on Sunday,Â
Zaiba Ishaque got UIW on the board just 3:29 into the game, scoring off a great pass from
Peri Olmo.
The score would stay 1-0 into the second half, when a great corner kick pass byÂ
Sloane Guion found its way to the head of
Riley Sheldon, pushing the lead to two in the 52nd minute.
It would stay that way for mere seconds, as the Tigers went immediately down field and got a goal by
Morgan Heintz, the first allowed by UIW this season.
Texas Southern would keep the offensive intensity high the rest of the way, but Alexander was able to meet the moment.Â
In both the 79th and 82nd minutes, Alana Aiken got clean looks just in front of the net, but both times Alexander denied her. The veteran keeper finished with five saves in the second half as the Cardinals were able to run out the final moments.
This marks the seventh time the Cardinals have started 3-0 or better, and the second time under current coach Jake Plant, whose team began the 2023 season 3-0-1.
UIW will get its most significant test of the season thus far on Sunday, when it travels to Dallas to face SMU at 7 p.m.
