Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season

DALLAS -- The University of the Incarnate Word struck quickly, but the Cardinal defense struggled to contain Southern Methodist University the rest of the way, as the Mustangs pulled away for a 5-1 win in a non-conference women's soccer matchup Sunday night.

For the third game in a row, UIW jumped ahead with a goal in the first seven minutes. This time, it occurred just 3 minutes, 32 seconds in when Morgan Heintz scored off an assist by Zaiba Ishaque.

But back-to-back goals by SMU's Brooke Bunton -- the first in the 16th minute, the second in the 27th -- put the Mustangs up for good.

After stretching its lead to 3-1 at the half, SMU struck again on Zoe Parkhurst goal just 42 seconds into the second half the added a final score with just over 10 minutes to play.

Sunday marked the first loss of the season for UIW, which drops to 3-1.

Having previously played just three total games against teams from power conferences in program history, the Cardinals are currently in the midst of a three-game stretch of matchups against the Power 4.

They'll stay in the ACC for game two, traveling to face Miami at 7 p.m. Thursday.
