Women's soccer upset bid lost on late PK at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Ahead in the second half and tied with under five minutes to play, the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team had an upset bid lost on a penalty kick in a 2-1 loss to the University of Miami Thursday night.

Offense was in very short supply early. It took 26 minutes, 46 seconds for either team to get a shot off and the two squads combined for just one shot on goal in the first half.

The Cardinals got just two shots off all night, but made the second one count, as a Taylor Kish goal off an Kiana Villa assist in the 55th minute had UIW in the driver's seat with a 1-0 lead.

But the Hurricanes, who had 12 shots in the second half, evened things up less than five minutes later on an unassisted goal by Cisel Akguel.

The UIW defense would hold strong for nearly 25 minutes, but Miami got a golden opportunity when the Cardinals were called for a foul inside the box.

With 5:27 left, the Hurricanes brought keeper Atlee Olofson up for the PK, which she sent into the upper part of the net, just past the outstretched fingers of Cardinal goalie Hannah Alexander.

Thursday was the second of three straight games UIW will play against Power 4 teams. That stretch will conclude in Austin on Sunday with a 7 p.m. matchup against Texas.
