The Cardinals started this weekend's Lone Star Conference series with an 8-2 road victory over East Central University, out-hitting the Tigers 12-to-4, including a pair of home runs, a pair of doubles and a triple by UIW's batters.
The score was tied, 1-1 going into the fourth inning when Incarnate Word () scored four runs with two outs to take a 5-1 lead. Ryan Flowers and Hector Flores got on-base with singles and then Leroy Urbina hit a double down the leftfield line to score Flowers. Then, Derrick Walls put a triple into right field that scored both Flores and Urbina before Walls, himself, scored on an RBI double by John Zule.
Urbina also sent a ball over the left field fence in the 6th inning. He finished the day 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. UIW's other homer was a two-run shot by Mike De La Rosa in the 7th inning.
Kirk Jewasko pitched all seven innings for his tenth win (10-1) of the season. He struck out 12 batters and walked only one Tiger while surrendering just four hits.
In game two, the Cardinals jumped out to a 8-0 lead against ECU before the home squad got a run home in the 8th inning.
Jackson Woodruff hit a home run and Steven Vidaurri hit a double and the rest of UIW's hits were singles.
Jorge Guarneros pitched six innings for the win, improving his record to 8-1. He allowed six hits, but no runs against and struck out seven Tigers.
Tomorrow, UIW and ECU will finish the series at 1 p.m. Incarnate Word will then return to San Antonio and play a “road” contest at St. Mary's University on Tuesday.
