The Incarnate Word baseball team had its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday, losing a close contest, 2-1, on the road against Central Oklahoma.
UIW is now 10-5 overall and 9-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Cardinals had a great effort from starting pitcher Ethan Lutz, who pitched six complete shutout innings (allowing just one hit) with nine strikeouts. However, when UCO took the 2-1 lead against Matt Hickman, Lutz was taken out of the decision and Hickman was given the loss.
Incarnate Word's lone run came in the top of the seventh as catcher Daniel Qualls, center fielder Ryan Flowers and shortstop Matt Flores all singled to load the bases. Then, sophomore right fielder Derrick Walls drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Qualls home, but a fielder's choice on the caught Flowers at home and the next batter stuck out swinging to leave three runners stranded and the lead only at 1-0.
The Bronchos hit a double, sac-bunted, tripled and sac-flied to score two runs and take the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh. UIW wasn't able to score in the eighth or ninth, despite getting players into scoring position both times.
The Cardinals play host to Eastern New Mexico at Sullivan Field in a three-game LSC series, starting on Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
