The UIW baseball team continued its winning ways on Friday, taking both games on the road against Lone Star Conference foe University of Central Oklahoma, 6-2 and 14-4, in Edmond, OK.
The Cardinals (10-4 overall, 9-2 LSC) took game one with another efficient effort by ace Kirk Jewasko, who pitched all seven innings for a 3-hit, 1-earned run victory. Jewasko struck out eight Bronchos and walked only one.
At the plate, the Cardinals got it done with singles, getting only one extra-base hit (a double by Mike De La Rosa) in their 12 times to make contact.
The big inning for UIW was the second, where five hits, a sacrifice bunt by Derrick Walls and an error scored 4 runs for the Cardinals.
Walls was 2-for-3 in the game. Daniel Qualls was 2-for-4 and had 3 RBI. Also hitting 2-for-4 were John Zule and Steven Vidaurri.
In game two, Jorge Guarneros earned his third victory in four appearances (3-0 on the season) despite three errors in the field by UIW. Of the four runs scored against him, only one was earned. He struck out two Bronchos and allowed six hits.
Designated hitter Jackson Woodruff went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI, including a double, while Matt Flores (3-for-4 with a double), Walls (3-for-6), Matt Roohan (3-for-6), Leroy Urbina (3-for-5 with a double), Vidaurri (2-for-5) and Ryan Flowers (2-for-4) contributed to give UIW seven players with multiple hits against UCO.
The Cardinals had 23 hits in the game.
Saturday's final game of the series is a nine-inning contest scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
UIW returns home next weekend for a LSC series against Eastern New Mexico, starting on March 11th (Friday) with a doubleheader.
