The Incarnate Word baseball team hosted Texas A&M International University on Tuesday in a pair of non-conference, seven-inning games and took both halves of the doubleheader, outscoring TAMIU 34-9.
The victory up's UIW's record to 15-5 on the season and makes them 12-2 at home thus far this season.
The Cardinals (ranked No. 6 in the NCBWA regional poll this week) had a pair of big games from first baseman Matt Roohan, who went 4-for-5 in game one and 3-for-5 in game two with a combined 8 RBI. He connected on home runs in both games and was a key factor for UIW upping their win-streak to five games.
Roohan is also riding a streak in which he has hit safely in 17 games, which is the longest of the season (Hector Flores had a 12-game streak earlier this season).
Also bringing a big bat to play were Mike De La Rosa (2-for-4 in game one with 5 RBIs thanks to a triple and a grand slam), Derrick Walls (combined 3-for-6 with a double and a triple), John Zule (combined 4-for-6 with 5 RBI, 3 walks, 2 doubles, a triple and a home run), and Ryan Flowers (combined 4-for-6 with 4 RBI and a double).
In both contests, UIW allowed a lot of its pitchers time to work in the non-conference matchup. Keith Vasquez improved his record to 3-1 on the year in game one and Zach Anderson got his first win of the season in game two.
Neither games were close enough to warrant a save opportunity, but Elroy Urbina pitched the final inning in both contests, allowing no runs, two hits and striking out three opponents in two innings of work.
Incarnate Word will be back in action in a Lone Star Conference series on the road against West Texas on Friday and Saturday. Then, UIW will play Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday before returning home for a series against Cameron University on the 25th and 26th.
