Saturday's season finale for the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team saw the Cardinals end the 2010-11 season on a high note with a 77-57 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville at the McDermott Center on Saturday.
“This season was tougher than I had expected, but when you have a young team and team full of new players, you have trouble having chemistry and consistency game-in and game-out,” head coach Angela Lawson said. “But, the good news is that everyone knows what it takes now and we can use this momentum to go into our offseason to prepare for next year.”
The Cardinals ended the season with a 9-17 overall record and a 5-9 Lone Star Conference South Division record, meaning the team did not finish in the top four of their division and will not be participating in the LSC Basketball Championship Tournament in Bartlesville, OK, next week.
Against the Javalinas, Incarnate Word had four players score in double-figures – all of which scoring more points than the three TAMUK players that scored 11 points.
Junior post Chloe Wallace led the way with a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double. Sophomore guard Katy Cook scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds while dishing out 7 assists (giving her 107 on the season). Freshman center Rose Whitehead scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot while fellow freshman Ifunanya Mora scored 12 points to go with her 4 rebounds, 2 assists, blocked shot and steal.
Also playing for UIW in the last game of season were sophomore guard Marissa Shinksy who scored 4 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 2 shots; freshman guard Kaylin Dugie, who added 8 points to her 3 rebounds and 2 assists; freshman Ashley Pfaff, who grabbed 3 rebounds and had an assist; and junior Amy Wilson.
