Back at Sullivan Field after a few days off following a busy weekend, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team got back to work against Lone Star Conference opponent Northeastern State.
The Riverhawks, from Oklahoma, were winless going into Friday's doubleheader against the Cardinals and UIW did what they had to do to keep it that way, winning 7-1 and 10-2 to improve their record to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in conference.
Junior pitcher Kirk Jewasko pitched a complete game in the seven-inning opener, striking out 10 of the 27 batters he faced. He allowed five hits, but walked no one and the lone run against him was scored on an error in the seventh inning and was unearned.
His record improves to 3-0 in three starts.
At the plate, UIW connected on eight hits – including doubles by Matt Roohan (2-for-4), Mike De la Rosa (2-for-4) and a triple by John Zule (3-for-3 with a walk) – and scored at least a run in every inning except the third.
In the second game, UIW's Jorge Guarneros also went seven innings for the victory, striking out five Riverhawks in 26 batters faced. NSU's only runs were scored in the first inning, but they were both unearned.
Things didn't looked too well for Incarnate Word as the Riverhawks kept them scoreless through four innings – but Guarneros responded with some shutdown work of his own and he and the defense put 0s up on the scoreboard while the Cardinal bats figured themselves out.
In the fifth inning, the floodgates opened and UIW scored seven runs – their six hits aided by three errors, all after the Cardinals had loaded the bases (two singles by Leroy Urbina and Josiah Rodriguez followed by another excellent bunt by Derrick Walls).
When the dust had settled, UIW was up 7-2 and all the momentum NSU had managed to build was gone.
The Cardinals added three more runs before the final out.
UIW had 16 hits against Northeastern State, including doubles by Roohan (2-for-4 with 2 RBI) and De la Rosa (3-for-5 with 2 RBI). Rodriguez and Walls both hit 2-for-4 while Ryan Flowers and Steven Vidaurri were 2-for-5.
Tomorrow's series finale is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
