On the road in Kansas against Newman University, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team fought for a 2-1 victory in a double-overtime game where Vinny Bailey set up both Cardinal goals on free kick opportunities.
Newman scored first, capitalizing on a penalty kick chance at the 20:53-mark of the first half. Asside from that, Newman had just one shot on goal all game, compared to the 29 chances that UIW generated during the contest.
The Cardinals (9-1-1 overall) – ranked No. 9 nationally by the NSCAA – finally got on the scoreboard in the 64th minute of the contest when Bailey took a free kick and Julien Brown-Latham redirected the ball into the back of the net for the 1-1 tie.
Neither team could get the game-winner in regulation and played through an entire period of extra time before starting the second overtime period.
It was then – at about the 102nd minute – that Bailey was given another free kick chance outside the Jets' penalty area. He sent another pass into the box and Abraham Campos headed the ball into the net for the game-winner.
The goals were the fourth and second of the season for Brown-Latham and Campos, respectively. Bailey's assists give him seven on the season – the most on the team.
Campos' goal is the second game-winner for him this weekend – he also scored the game winner in Friday night's 1-0 win over No. 15-ranked Northeastern State.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday night, playing host to St. Edward's University at 8:30 p.m., or 30 minutes following the women's soccer match.
