MEN STAY UNDEFEATED WITH 2-1 WIN

Justin Odette (6) and Jesus Cortez combined for the game-winning goal in Friday night's 2-1 victory over Texas A&M International University.

The Incarnate Word men's soccer team got back from a successful road trip to Florida with an unbeaten record and a No. 13 ranking nationally, but soon were back on the bus for Laredo, Texas, to take on Texas A&M International University on Friday night.

The Cardinals didn't show any rust from being on the road so much the last few days, defeating the Dustdevils, 2-1, on goals by Callum Riley and Justin Odette.

Callum Riley
Riley, who leads the team and is in the top three of the Lone Star Conference with four goals thus far this season, scored in the 31st minute of play, arching a free kick opportunity from over 20 yards away from the goal for the 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way into the second half until Odette scored his first goal of the season in close after a pass from Jesus Cortez (his second assist of the season) on a corner kick for the Cardinals in the 64th minute.

TAMIU, however, made things interesting in the 74th minute by ending the shutout bid and scoring on a chance in near the goal.

UIW held on and remain undefeated with a 3-0 overall record. Up next for Incarnate Word is another road contest – this against No. 3-ranked (nationally) and Lone Star Conference member Midwestern State University next Friday night in Wichita Falls, TX.

The Mustangs defeated TAMIU, 2-0, earlier this week and are ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II South Central region. UIW is ranked No. 2 in the region.
