CARDINALS MOVE ON IN TENNIS

#17 INCARNATE WORD 5, #27 WASHBURN 2

In a nine-point tennis match winning three doubles to start out the day is huge and that is what Incarnate Word did Thursday in advancing in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional championships.

The Cardinals swept the doubles and picked up the needed two other points in singles to move on to a 10 a.m. championship match against host Abilene Christian.  This winner gets a berth in the round of 16 at the national tournament set for May 12-15 in Altamonte, Fla.

After the doubles were completed, UIW's Alex Wieland won handily at number four singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Yann Kasay.  Down in all the first sets of the remaining singles, the Cardinals needed a rally for the fifth and deciding point.

That came at number two where Max Moreau came back to win his first set by 7-6 in a tiebreaker over Ryan Ward and then won another close set 7-5 for the team victory.

On Friday the Cardinals will be seeking their second trip to the national championships having reached that level for the first time back in 2002.

This is the seventh time in their 11 NCAA years the Cardinals have been in the regional tournament
