The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team suffered a big loss to cross-town rival St. Mary's University on Saturday, getting run-ruled in seven innings by a score of 23-7.
The Cardinals, 14-4 overall and 14-2 in the Heartland Conference, were out-hit 20-to-6 by the Rattlers and committed five errors, suffering their first two-game losing skid of the season.
STMU (10-6 overall, 10-6 conference) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then exploded for 11 runs in the second inning on 6 hits and 3 errors. The Cards tried to respond, getting four runs in the bottom of the second, but never got the STMU lead closer than 14-4.
Reno Malay was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Matt Roohan was 2-for-4 as the best hitters for UIW.
Incarnate Word will head to Odessa next weekend for two doubleheaders against University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
