The weather was poor and the soccer left something to be desired on Friday night as the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against visiting Rollins College at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
“Neither team played well enough to win,” UIW coach John Smith said, summing up the night.
Each team was credit with nine shots and 15 fouls in a game that saw lots of rain and only a combined six shots on-goal.
UIW (1-0-1) had gone into Friday's matchup off a 1-0 victory over Midwestern State University last week that had propelled the Cardinals into the #14 spot on the national polls, but much like the game against MSU (which had been decided by an own-goal against the Mustangs), Incarnate Word's offense couldn't find the back of the net.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Eschenburg played 120 minutes flawlessly, making two huge saves – one on a breakaway by Rollins' Dennis Chin and another in close in the first overtime period.
The game had a bit of a personal spin on it for coach Smith, who graduated from Rollins College.
“It was great of them (Rollins) to come out here,” Smith said. “It was nice to see them and I know they're going to have a successful year in their region.”
Personal feelings aside, not getting a win stymies some of the momentum gained by UIW heading into Sunday night's Heartland Conference matchup against St. Edward's University, which is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
