The Incarnate Word men's soccer team is no longer unbeaten this season, thanks to a visit from Truman State University on Friday night.
The Bulldogs came into Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium and showed no fear against the No. 7-ranked Cardinals (3-1-2) and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the game. TSU sent multiple forwards into the Incarnate Word goal box and put the ball on-net and took advantage of the Cardinals' inability to clear away the garbage.
“Some of our guys didn't show up tonight,” UIW head coach John Smith said after the game. “We didn't deserve to win that game.”
After the Cardinals woke up, the game was much more even and UIW even seemed, at times, to control the action and the pace. But, it wasn't until Truman State tipped a crossing pass by Incarnate Word into its own net in the 28th minute that the Cardinals got on the scoreboard, 3-1.
From then on, the Cardinals continued to press and fight against the odds to try and pull off the miraculous comeback. Late in the game, Troy Thompson put a corner kick onto the head of Justin Odette for a 3-2 score with just over eight minutes left to play.
The Cardinals threw everything at the Bulldogs' net in the final moments – even moving defender Jamie Scope up into the midfield – but it would prove to be too little too late, and the Cardinals went down to unranked Truman State.
Up next for the Cardinals, UIW will try to get back into the win column against West Texas A&M University on Friday, September 25th, at 8:15 p.m. The game will be played at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
