CARDINALS PRESSURE #5 MSU INTO FATAL MISTAKE

UIW men's soccer
The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team had a tough opponent to open up the 2009 season on Friday night, playing host to the No. 5-ranked Midwestern State Mustangs at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals responded by out-shooting the Mustangs 11-to-6 and pressuring MSU into an own-goal just two minutes into the second half for the 1-0 victory over the ranked Mustangs.

Sophomore Jesus Cortez, who had streaked down the right side of the field and sent a low, fast crossing pass in front of Midwestern State's goal, got the credit for the goal as he was the last Cardinal player to touch the ball before it was deflected into the goal by a MSU defender.

Cortez had four shots in the contest to lead all UIW players.

On the other side of the field, UIW goalkeeper Ryan Eschenberg made six saves for the shutout victory and helped lead the Cardinals to avenge a 4-1 loss at Benson Stadium to the Mustangs last season.

Incarnate Word (1-0-0) next takes the field against Rollins from Florida on Friday, September 4th at 8:15 p.m. at Benson Stadium. That following Sunday, September 6th, UIW has a Heartland Conference game against St. Edward's University at 7 p.m.

SEU lost their season-opener to West Texas A&M, 3-0, on Friday.
