BUFFS BEAT CARDINALS, 3-1, IN CANYON

It was a tale of two halves in Canyon, TX, on Friday, as the Incarnate Word men's soccer team surrendered a first half lead to No. 6-ranked West Texas A&M en route to a 3-1 loss.

Jesus Cortez scored his first goal of the season for UIW (6-6-3 overall) in the 11th minute when he got his head on a bouncing ball from about five yards out. The score put the Cardinals up, 1-0, on a team that had defeated UIW, 2-0, back in San Antonio on September 22nd.

The Cardinals out-shot the Buffaloes (12-1-1) in the first half, but in the second, WTAMU blistered the Incarnate Word goal with 10 shots.

Of those ten attempts, three found a way into the back of the goal and West Texas got another two-goal victory over Incarnate Word, 3-1. The first goal came in the 54th minute and the final tally – both scored by Aaron Thornton – came in the 69th minute.

The Cardinals return home on Friday night for a Heartland Conference matchup against Texas-Permian Basin, a team that UIW defeated, 4-3, in overtime earlier this year. Game is slated to kickoff at 8:15 p.m. and is part of a soccer doubleheader at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium on Friday.
