Softball Wins Two Southland Conference Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word had another dominant week winning five of six Southland Conference games at home against Northwestern State and on the road against East Texas A&M.

Game one of the week against Northwestern State was close in the early innings. The Cardinals quickly got things going in the third, fourth and fifth innings, scoring seven runs and completely taking control of the game. Larissa Jacquez remained solid in the circle only allowing five hits and not giving up a run until the seventh inning when NWST scored twice. The Cardinals took game one 7-2.

The Cardinals came out swinging, scoring five runs in the first inning. The Demons cut into the lead scoring three runs in the third. In the final three innings of the game the Cardinals and the Demons traded run, but in the end UIW was able to hang on to win 8-7, and earned another SLC series victory.

On Wednesday Northwestern State got its first lead of the series 2-0 in the third. Victoria Altamirano homered to left field cutting the Demon lead in half. Neither team would score until NWST put up two in the seventh. Not all hope was lost and Gracie Alejo hit her first career home run to make the score 3-4. The Cardinals weren't able to complete the comeback and dropped the final game 4-3.

In the first game against the Lions, Larissa had a dominant outing, throwing seven scoreless innings and striking our nearly half of the batters she faced, 12 of 28. The Cardinals took game one 2-0.

In game two the bats got going. Victoria had yet another lead off home run to put UIW up early. In both the third and the fourth inning the Cardinals batted around the lineup and put up 16 runs, extending the lead to 17-1. East Texas added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Samantha Portillo shut down the Lions in five innings, 17-3.

The third game of the series was a combination of the first two. UIW got out to an early lead after the first three batters got on base, Erin Perez singled to left field and Jillian Guitierez hit a sacrifice fly out to right and the Cardinals held a 2-0 lead. Larissa Jacquez was back in the circle and didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning. Also, in the fifth inning UIW capitalized on East Texas' mistakes to put up a couple more runs and extend its lead to 4-0. In the seventh the Cardinals scored again on a wild pitch and padded the lead with the Jaisy Caceres two-RBI double. UIW finished the game with a 7-0 win and another SLC series sweep.
