ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of the Incarnate Word swim and dive team continued to make history in the final meet of the season at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Conference championships.
In the very first race of the 2025 championship meet the relay team of
Laney Skrobanek,
Jada Ashford,
Kirstin Schauss, and Cat Stephen out touched University of Pacific to earn second in the 200-medley relay.
Roldan Salas was the first champion crowned for the Cardinals taking first place in the 1-meter boards, with 188.5 points. He followed that up with another great performance also winning the 3-meter competition scoring 209.1 points on the second day of competition.
Over in the pool in the first round of individual swim finals UIW dominated the distance events. Freshman,
Lauren Matula earned her first piece of hardware as a Cardinal, placing second in the 500 free; a race where first second and third were within a second of one another. Also, in the 500
Panos Vlachogiannakos took care of business finishing as he has so many times before in first place.
Mundo Gomez followed close behind taking second in that race, making three of the six podium finishers UIW Cardinals.
It wasn't just the distance events where UIW shined as the Cardinals also dominated the sprint events. In the 50 free Jada placed first on the women's side. On the men's side of things, the Cardinals made it as clean sweep,
Fabio Fasolo,
Luis Oliveira, and
Spyros Kranias finished first, second, and third respectively. That trio, along with
Amechi Nwaeze ran away with the 200 free relay getting their second gold of the day. Fasolo led off the relay in a blazing 19.72 seconds, setting a new UIW record in the 50 free.
Maksym Holubnychi added to the Cardinals podium totals speeding into second in the 200 IM.
On Day two the dominance of Jada, 100 breast, and Panos, 400 IM, persisted as they each comfortably won their events. The Cardinals racked up four difference second place finishes with
Matt Hardy in the 100 fly, Maksym in the 400 IM, Luis in the 200 free, and
Caleb Rojas in the 100 back. Laney finished third in the 100 back and Spyros rounded out the group earning another spot on the podium finishing third in the 100 breast.
The night was capped off with two great relay performances in the 400-medley when both the men and women took home second in the event.
In the final day of competition there was three event which saw two Cardinals place in the top three. First Panos held on to his crown in the mile followed by
Okay Yildiz who finished second. Fabio and Luis took second and third in the 100 free. Finally, in the 200 fly Mundo came roaring back in the final 50 to take second place ad Bontond Ulrich placed third.
Jada completed her weekend undefeated in individual races taking first in the 100 freestyle. Maksym broke through and not only making it on to the podium, but earned the gold, finishing first in the 200 breast.
Kayley Radford made her presence felt as the fourth freshman to place top three for the Cardinals, finishing third in the 200 fly.
Luis, Fabio,
Mykyta Kolesnykov, and
Matt Hardy were the final four to compete for the Cardinals in the 400-freestyle relay. This group not only took first but set a new school record with a time of 2:54.74 to finish the meet.
