Cardinals Hit the Road for Mid-Season Championships

COLLEGE STATION, TX – The University of the Incarnate Word swim and dive team competed at the Art Adamson Invitational from November 20 through November 22 at Texas A&M University in College Station. The Cardinals faced a couple local opponents in A&M and Texas Christian University, along with a few teams from around out west such as Air Force, Utah and Washington State.

Panos Vlachogiannakos was the star of the show making it back to finals in all of his events and breaking three school records in the process. On day one Panos went 4:20.76 breaking the longstanding record from 2018 in the 500. He followed this up making the final in the 400 IM. The final day was where Vlachogiannakos shined. In the mile (1650 yards) Panos started strong breaking the UIW record in the 1,000 with a 8:59.16 split. He finished the swim with a time of 14:54.34 and his third school record of the week.

Four other Cardinals joined together to take down another school record while in College Station. Ashton Moser, Spyros Kranias, Matt Hardy, and Fabio Fasolo went a blazing 1:26.58 in the 200-medley relay. On top of these record breaking performcaes the Cardinals had several other swimmers qualify for finals showing their strength against some of the best in the nation.

On the final day of competition at the Art Adamson Invite there were a few other student-athletes who were in San Antonio competing in the Tiger Invitational at Trinity over the weekend.

Izzy Dollar was the lone diver to compete showing her skills in the one and three meter dives.

Three freshmen swam for UIW at the meet Lillian Payton made it into the A-Final in the 200 fly along with the B-Final in the 100 fly and 200 IM. Emily Fosbenner made it to the B-Final in the 100 backstroke as well as both the 100 and 50 freestyle. Macy Fowler rounded out the group of fresh faces competing against Trinity.

The Cardinals won't compete again until January 18 when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs. You can find all the results from these last two meets and every Cardinal swim meet on the UIW Swim & Dive schedule page.
