SAN ANTONIO – Ryan Shotzberger guided the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team to the best start in Division I program history to begin his fifth season as head coach. Shotzberger also tallied his 100th career win during the 2024 season with a victory over Northwestern State University.
UIW cruised to a 7-1 record while nationally ranking first in triples, third in runs scored, seventh in hits, eighth in batting average, and fifteenth in home runs across all NCAA during the incredible start.
The 2024 Cardinal squad finished the season with five sweeps, the most in DI program history, and clinched a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament. UIW ended six games early this past season, run-ruling UIC, Alcorn State, Baylor, and HCU. As a team, the Cardinals tallied the most home runs, RBI, and most runs scored in a single Division I season.
Two student-athletes received postseason honors with DH Dalton Beck being named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year and to the All-Conference First Team, while outfielder Cameron Caley earned second-team status.
Four Cardinals broke Division I single-season and career records. Catcher JD Gregson threw out a record 23 runners trying to steal. Right-handed pitcher Isaiah Zavala ended his five-year career at UIW with the most starts and most shutouts in a career by a Cardinal pitcher. Caley etched his name into the record book with the most runs scored and most walks in a single season. Beck ended the 2024 season with the most hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, intentional walks, highest slugging percentage, and most at-bats in a single season in UIW history.
