EDINBURG, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell 5-0 in the final game of the weekend and final road series of 2026 to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this afternoon in Southland action. The Cardinals drop to 18-27 and 8-19 in the SLC, while UTRGV moved to 24-25 and 17-13.
In the top of the first, UIW looked to get on the board early when
Cole Tabor singled up the middle with one down. He later moved to second off a balk call, but was left stranded as the inning ended.
With two down in the top of the third,
Preston Newberry singled to shallow right field and then stole second, but a flyout to deep center field ended the frame.
Both teams, after the first three innings, were scoreless after getting at least one base runner on in each inning.
UIW in the top of the fourth collected its third hit of the contest when
Colin Cymbalista singled to left with two outs, but a lineout to first ended the inning.
UTRGV, in its half of the fourth, broke the scoreless drought when it plated five runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead.
Cole Tabor in the sixth was hit by a pitch to reach first with one down and then advanced to second when
Drake Anderson was walked on five pitches. Unfortunately, a double play ended the UIW threat.
The UTRGV bullpen did not allow a Cardinal to reach base over the final three innings to secure the win.
Starting pitcher
Fawster Voytko took the loss to drop to 2-5 on the year. He allowed five runs on four hits over three and a third innings while striking out three.
Relievers
Tanner Crispin,
Braelin Pillot, and
Matthew Foley allowed just three baseball runners to reach for the remaining four and two-thirds innings.
Newberry, Tabor, and Cymbalista collected the team's three hits, while Anderson recorded the Cardinals' only walk.
UIW is back home to close out the regular season on Thursday, May 7, when it hosts Stephen F. Austin University in the final Southland Conference series.
