SAN ANTONIO – Three student-athletes from the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team were named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Team, the league announced on Friday.
Daniel Calabrese was named to the first team, while
Isaiah Zavala and
Rey Mendoza earned second-team status.
Daniel Calabrese | Biochemistry | 3.72 GPA
Calabrese held the third-best batting average (.304) for the Cardinals and tallied 27 runs, 45 hits, 11 doubles, one home run, and 22 RBI through his 39 games started. Defensively, he held a .990 fielding percentage with 100 catches and 98 POs in the outfield.
Isaiah Zavala | MBA – Accounting | 3.85 GPA
Zavala holds the UIW record for most starts in a career and most shutouts in a season and in a career. He finished his final season at UIW as the Saturday pitcher, compiling a 4-6 record through 86 innings pitched. With 13 starts on the mound, he threw three complete games and two shutouts to earn himself SLC Pitcher of the Week.
Rey Mendoza | MBA | 3.50 GPA
The 2023 Newcomer of the Year,
Rey Mendoza, battled an injury for most of the season but still put-up numbers for the Cardinals with 31 runs, 37 hits, seven doubles, four home runs, and 24 RBIs through 38 games. Defensively he holds a perfect fielding percentage at left field with 80 catches, 78 POs, two assists, and zero errors.
