Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word softball team finished a historic regular season, going 31-15. The Cardinals ended the weekend 1-1 after Sunday's game was canceled due to weather.
After setting numerous records throughout this season, UIW finished with the most regular season wins ever in Coach Kimberly Dean's third season. Not only did they set the record for overall wins, but most conference wins (15) and home wins (19).
NSU (1-1)
The Cardinals started the first game of Friday's doubleheader down 2-0 after the Demons scored a run early in the first inning. Just as NSU believed to have a hold on UIW, the Cardinals came storming back to score six runs in the second.
With two on base, Ryleigh Mata stepped up to the plate to slam a single to center field and bring home the first Cardinal run. Right after, Baylee Lemons hit her fifth double of the season to bring home both Mata and Maddison Guillen. Victoria Altamirano then hit a double herself to score two more Cardinal runs. To keep the scoring run going, Jillian Guiterrez singled to center field, bringing home Ayla Gonzales and Altamirano and extending the lead to 8-1.
The Cardinals held NSU to three hits the entire game. Freshman Larissa Jacquez pitched a complete game and finished with four strikeouts in the 29 batters she faced. Jacquez moved to 11-5 on the season.
In Friday's second game, UIW was shut out for only the second time this season. Though getting the same number of hits as the Demons, three, UIW struggled finding their groove. The game still was a battle as Samantha Portillo held NSU to one run. She moved to 8-6 on the season and finished the game with two strikeouts and one walk, facing only 21 total batters.
The Cardinals will start postseason play on Tuesday (5/7) in Hammond, Louisiana at the Southland Conference Tournament. For more information click here.
