SAN ANTONIO – Brandelyn Fulgenzi led the University of the Incarnate Word women's tennis team this Spring, finishing No. 1 singles 6-1 to earn Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year and a spot on the singles first team. Fulgenzi partnered up with freshman
Estefania Gonzalez to complete the season undefeated at No. 1 doubles (7-0) and earn SLC first-team status.
"A great honor for Brandee to be named Conference Player of the Year after a record-setting season at the top of the lineup," said head coach
Tom Rees. "She has worked tirelessly all year, going above and beyond to be in the best shape of her career physically, and has fully bought into her tactical identity on the court allowing her to pay freely, fiercely and with great courage, She truly leads by example in her commitment to excellence."
Fulgenzi is not only a leader for the Cardinals, but also in the conference with the best overall singles record (16-3) in the SLC, and in the nation as an ITA Texas Region Doubles Champion who has been in the ITA doubles rankings all year.
Freshman, Gonzalez made an immediate impact for the Cardinals, teaming up with Fulgenzi to go undefeated at No. 1 doubles in the conference and finish the season 16-0 overall. At No. 2 singles, she finished her season 3-4.
The Cardinals head into the Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will have a bye in the first round. On Friday, April 21 at 2 p.m, UIW will face the winner between No. 7 Southeastern and No. 10 New Orleans.
