Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team won one and lost won in day two of the series against Stephen F. Austin. In the three overall games, SFA took the series 2-1.
Game 1: UIW vs SFA, 4-2
UIW got on the board first as Baylee Lemons hit a sacrifice fly ball out into right field so Giselle Villarreal could waltz in at the plate. The Lumberjacks answered back quick as they scored a run of their own to tie the game 1-1.
In the second, both teams went scoreless as the pitching staffs were on a roll. When the Cardinals opened up the top of the third Villarreal tallied her second hit of the day to put herself on base. Ryleigh Mata walked and soon enough UIW placed themselves in scoring position. Lemons again came up to the plate and slashed a single through the left side for another RBI and Cardinal run. Villarreal ran in for the 2-1 UIW lead.
In a last chance bottom of the inning, SFA tied up the game and loaded the bases with no outs. A Lumberjack hit a line drive over to Maddison Guillen who made a clutch double play taking out the runner at third as well. Gunther stepped up to deliver a strikeout and the game headed into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth UIW scored two runs to grab the lead 4-2. Guillen and Avalon Sanchez stepped up big to earn individual RBIs bringing home their Cardinal teammates. In another last attempt by the Lumberjacks the Cardinal defense proved to be too much as it was a three up three down situation for the end of the game.
UIW pitchers Madison Floyd and Annie Gunther had a fantastic day. Floyd earned an era of 2.33 in the six innings she pitched with four strikeouts. Gunther came up big to pitch the final two innings and only allowed one hit, one walk, and added a strikeout to her stat sheet.
Game 2: UIW vs SFA
The second game of the doubleheader was a bit of a slower than game one. By the beginning of the fifth inning the Cardinals were down by three. When they had their turn in the bottom, things started to roll offensively for UIW.
After four total batters, the Cardinals loaded the bases and Lemons was up at the plate. With a rocket to center field Lemons got an RBI and loaded the bases yet again. Victoria Altamirano kept the juices flowing and blasted a shot down the left line for her fourth double of the season. Two runners came in and the game was tied at three. UIW wasn't done yet as Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in Lemons and help the Cardinals go up by one. In that inning UIW finished with four runs on three hits.
It was like déjà vu again in the seventh inning. UIW was up by one and the Lumberjacks were backed against a wall. They were able to tie it up with a run and loaded the bases with two outs. Thankfully, the Cardinals tabbed their third out and the game again went into extra innings.
The Lumberjacks loaded the bases deep into the eighth inning and hit a walk off single to win the game 5-4.
