SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to Houston Christian University 7-6, on Sunday, afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B, but the Cardinals still walked away with a 2-1 series victory.
Rey Mendoza led the team in hits with two and in RBIs with five in the loss.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings until the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
An error in the fifth allowed the Huskies to extend their lead to 3-0 and then again in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer (5-0). Later in the inning, the Cardinals drove in five runs to tie the game at 5-5. A bases-loaded walk drove in the Cardinal's first run, and Mendoza's second grand slam of the weekend tied the game up.
Mendoza came through for the Cardinals again in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead.
The Huskies wouldn't go quietly, taking the lead in the top of the ninth on a two-run homer. The Cardinals would go down in order in the home half of the ninth to end the game.
