STEPHENVILLE– The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to Tarleton State University, 8-7, Sunday afternoon on a walk-off solo home run.
Hernan Yanez and Alec Carr led all Cardinals in hits with two. Rey Mendoza led the team in RBIs with two in the loss.
Carr got the Cardinals on the board early with an RBI single in the top of the first. The Texans responded later in the inning, driving in two runs to take the lead, 2-1.
The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Tarleton State doubled its run total on an RBI single and error to extend the lead to 4-1.
Grant Randall crushed a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the seventh to pull the Cardinals within two, 4-2. Later in the inning, the Texans drove in two more runs to extend their lead to 6-2.
The Cardinals responded, driving in two runs to bring the score to 6-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Tarleton drove in a run in the home half of the eighth on an RBI single to bring the score to 7-4.
Down three in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals clawed their way back into the game. A wild pitch allowed the Cardinals to pull within two, and Mendoza tied the game up at 7-7 with two outs on a bloop single to left field. After getting two quick outs, the Texans ended the game on a walk-off solo home run, bringing the final score to 8-7.
