AUSTIN – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team fell to the University of Texas, 17-11, Tuesday evening.
Wilson Ehrhardt led the Cardinals in hits with three and in RBIs with four. Alec Carr finished with two hits and three RBIs in the loss.
On the game's second pitch, Ehrhardt sent one deep over the right field wall to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Later in the inning, the Longhorns drove in four runs on an RBI single and a three-run home run to take a 4-1 edge.
The Longhorns extended their lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single up the middle before adding another run in the bottom of the third on a solo shot to bring the score to 6-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Longhorns drove in four on two home runs and one error to take a nine-run advantage (10-1).
The Cardinals drove in three runs in the top of the fifth to bring the score to 10-4. Ehrhardt picked up his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly, while Hernan Yanez and Carr each drove in a run on RBI singles. UT got one run back in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 11-4.
UIW drove in three runs in the top of the sixth to pull within four, 11-7. Ehrhardt drove in two more runs on an RBI single, and the Cardinals added another run on a fielder's choice. The Longhorns drove six runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 17-7.
Carr drove in two on a single in the top of the eighth to bring the score to 17-9. Then, the Cardinals drove in two runs in the top of the ninth on a fielder's choice, and a sacrifice fly to bring the final score to 17-11.
