SAN ANTONIO – Rey Mendoza hit a walk-off grand slam in extra innings to give the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team its first conference win over Houston Christian University, 7-3, on Friday evening at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
In his first game back in the starting lineup Matt Crump led the Cardinals in hits with three. Mendoza led the Cardinals in RBIs with five and finished with two hits.
Warren Laster gave the Cardinals the early lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 2-0.
Mendoza singled in a run in the bottom of the third to extend the Cardinal's lead to 3-0.
After two scoreless innings, the Huskies got on the board in the sixth on an RBI triple to pull within two, 3-1.
The Huskies would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the eleventh when Mendoza emptied the bases on a walk-off grand slam to secure the Cardinal's first conference win of the season.
