Baseball Sweeps Southern Behind Great Pitching and Hitting

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team sent Southern University home early on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Jaguars 12-2 in seven innings at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B to finish off the series sweep. 

Daniel Calabrese led the Cardinals in hits with four, he also finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Rey Mendoza, Alec Carr, and Joe Jimenez each led the team in RBIs with two. Micah Berens pitched an incredible game, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six batters. Berens also held a no-hitter through 5.1 innings. 

The Jaguars took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on an error. The Cardinals responded in the home half of the first, bringing all nine batters to the plate and scoring four to take a 4-1 lead. Calabrese tied it up on a passed ball. Carr tripled to give the Cardinals the lead and Hernan Yanez and Jimmy De Leon each picked up RBIs to extend their lead.  

The Cardinals drove in two more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 6-1. Calabrese picked up an RBI single, and Carr picked up his second RBI of the day. 

Joe Jimenez singled in a run for the Cardinals in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 7-1.  

Rey Mendoza launched a solo home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cardinals an 8-1 lead.  

UIW made it five straight innings of scoring, driving in two in the bottom of the fifth. Jimenez and Calabrese each picked up their second RBIs of the game on singles through the left side of the infield, bringing the score to 10-1.  

Southern got back on the board in the sixth with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 10-2. The Cardinals got the run right back in the bottom of the inning, extending their lead to 11-2.  

The Cardinals capped off the game by driving home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Mendoza to end the game at 12-2.
